The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and fill the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
